Chef / Restrauteur Bev Gannon

From Shutter: During a recent trip to Maui, HI, we had the opportunity to visit with, and photograph one of Maui’s popular chefs, Bev Gannon.  Chef Gannon took time out of her busy day to share stories, experiences, and of course food with us.

For people that have not been to Hawaii, you may not be aware of this celebrated chef / restrauteur.  In addition to her three restaurants, Hali`imaile General Store, Joe’s, and Gannon’s, she is the owner of Celebrations Catering.  And despite this busy schedule, she has published 2 cookbooks.  “The Hali‘imaile General Store Cookbook” and “Family Style Meals at the Hali‘imaile General Store”.

This photo of Chef Gannon, and the following photograph of Shichimi Crusted Ahi Tostada ( Seared ahi poke, sesame soy aioli, red cabbage, iceberg lettuce, cucumbers, sesame seeds, tabiko, avocado, crispy onion strings, crispy lumpia wrapper ) were taken at the newest of her restaurants, Gannon’s, which is located on the Wailea Emerald Gold Golf Course.  Not only is food delicious, but the view at this restaurant can’t be beat.

From Ted: This Photo of the Week is a bit different.  Although I am not normally an event photographer, I was excited when I had the opportunity to photograph this event, the 2nd Annual Cold River Bartenders Bash, for Maine Distilleries.  So instead of a single photo, I am including a few, and a slide show.

On Monday, February 2 Maine Distilleries, the makers of Cold River Gin and Cold River Vodka, hosted their 2nd Annual Bartender’s Bash in Portland, Maine.  This event, attended by over 400 people was the culmination of months of competition by some of Maine’s finest bartenders.  Each contestant had to come up with an original cocktail using either Cold River Gin or Cold River Vodka.  Eventually the field of great talents was whittled down to 20 contestants. Leah Chamberlin and Laura Romasco of Old Seaport Sea Grill, won with their “Cucumber Martini”.  To learn more about the event and the winners you can go to Frontburner PR for the press release.

From Ted: Early last fall I had a wonderful photo assignment for Portland Magazine.  The magazine was doing a story on Chef Sebastian Carosi and his New England Farm to Fork project.  Chef Carosi and his wife, along with their young son travel, like nomads, spreading the gospel of local sustainable food.  Carosi and family usually set up camp in a community and use that as “home” base for a season of hosting dinners and educating the public on sustainable farming.

I came across this photo while updating my website and started daydreaming about the upcoming growing season, fresh produce, and the great time  had with Chef Carosi and his family.

Fisherman and boatbuilders

From Ted: This was photographed at the Porthole Restaurant in Portland, Maine while working on the cover story about comfort food in Maine for Down East Magazine. In addition to this story, I also photographed the restaurant review (50 Local in Kennebunk) and the cover. The Porthole is located on the waterfront of Portland and attracts quite a diverse crowd for what many say is the best breakfast around.  Although this photo did not make it into the story, it is one of my favorites.

From Ted: According to Wikipedia,  the ostrich is the largest living bird.  I was going through some old photographs when I came across this snap shot and it just made me smile.  I took this at Fossil Farms ostrich farm in Andover, New Jersey, for one of the first assignments Susan and I did together. The ostrich roam freely in paddocks and have lots of acreage to roam, and run.  In addition to being the largest living bird, they are the fastest birds.  To watch them run is like a scene out of Jurrasic Park.

I know this may be hard to believe – but it ended up being a  fun, and ROMANTIC day!

I certainly hope this makes you smile and chuckle as well.
